20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord (Colossians 3).
The word “obedient” literally means “to hear under,” thus to “to heed” someone. It is not merely not to go out and do something wrong. It begins at the very moment that a parent speaks. Obedient children listen to their parents, and do not ignore them. Moreover, they listen with an ear to really hear them; they listen with a predisposed attitude of doing exactly what they say.
This is the attitude that is “well-pleasing to the Lord” and nothing less will do. There is no “I’ll just get an idea of what they want, and then decide whether or not it fits into my agenda.” Or, “I’ll make it appear as if I’m listening, even if my mind is really elsewhere.” No, obedient children are eager to listen.
Lord, help all the children in our care or under our influence to listen under us This Day. Amen.
