1 Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven (Colossians 4).
Concerning how a master should treat his slaves, the word “justice” means “righteously” or “virtuously”—which is characterized by having the quality of “fairness” about him. Masters should act this way toward their slaves, because they, who themselves are “slaves” to God, know how God treats them in this way.
Surely this must have been one of the strangest things for unbelievers to see among their Christian neighbors—hard-working, happy slaves (3:22-25) working for just and fair masters. Before this new God named Jesus showed up, such a relationship had been unheard of.
Lord, help us This Day to treat those who answer to us with justice and fairness. Amen.
