A Personal Stake

5 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity (Colossians 4).

We tend to value more that which we have personal investment in. That’s why it’s good to ask for people to purchase at least part of a booklet for Bible study, rather than just giving it to them. That which costs someone nothing is often taken for granted, but that which we have a personal stake in is highly valued.

This is the idea of the phrase “making the most of the opportunity.” It literally means “redeeming the time”—as if we are investing our life in every second of trying to reach lost people for Christ. When we consider ourselves as having a stake in this life—that it really matters how we spend our time—then we will try to “conduct [ourselves] with wisdom toward outsiders”—to those outside the faith.

Lord, help us This Day to have a personal stake in the time we have here on earth. Amen.
