19 My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you— … (Galatians 4).
What a vivid and beautiful picture of ministry Paul paints: it is like a mother laboring to bear a healthy child. It is “labor”—difficult, intense, painful, and time-consuming. I distinctly remember after witnessing each birth of our children, how I went away—not just with a greater love for my wife, but also with a greater respect for her and wonder at how she could do such a thing. It is a reminder that those in ministry deserve the same respect and wonder.
Just as God is the One who creates children in the womb, so is He also the One who forms Christ in believers. To be a child of God is to have “Christ … formed in you” through the ministry of God’s Spirit and those midwifing ministers He has called alongside to assist. Every ministry would do well to be reminded of this amazing privilege!
Lord, thank You for the privilege of being called to come alongside to assist in Christ being formed in others. Help us all This Day to be good midwives. Amen.
