29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also (Galatians 4).
People who are in bondage to believing they can earn their way to heaven by good works will always persecute those who believe they cannot. So it was in Paul’s day, and “so it is now also.” This is because they take grace as a personal affront to their own prideful sense of goodness. The flesh simply does not appreciate being told it is lacking in anything!
I know, because I was once like them. I despised Christians who told me my good works were not enough, because in my mind I believed they thought they were better than me (which they did not)—when the truth is, I thought I was at least as good or even a better person than them!
Lord, thank You for breaking through our pride and causing us to see our need for Christ. And thank You for forgiving us for all the bad things we said about or did against Christians. Help us This Day to endure any persecution that may now come our way. Amen.
