3 … I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith … (Jude).
Since my automobile offers the function of informing me every half-mile or so what my gas mileage displays, on occasion I like to see how high I can make it register by taking my foot off of the gas and coasting downhill. This is exactly the opposite of what is expressed in this verse before us.
Jude felt “the necessity to write” to them because he knew our tendency to desire to “coast” in the Christian life and exert as little effort as possible. We want everything to be easy—from a microwaved dinner to an unread Bible or a prayerless devotion or a wordless witness. He wanted to remind us that we must “contend earnestly for the faith”—and not simply possess that faith, but profess it as well.
Lord, help us This Day to contend for the faith and not just to coast in it. Amen.
